By 3 p.m., everything was all ready to go. The tiramisus were in the fridge, the garlic bread prepared, the salad ready to dress and eight huge lasagnes were ready to bake. We packed everything in Jools’s car and began the short journey to Mum’s.

‘I feel sick at the thought of ever making a lasagne again,’ I said, as Jools drove along my road. ‘I should have listened to Richard.’

‘It’s just catering on such a large scale.’ Jools had seemed preoccupied all day. ‘Talking of which… what do you think of Erik? He’s the man equivalent of catering for a crowd. He’s like two men rolled into one.’

‘It depends on which two men he is.’

‘I don’t think I care,’ she said. ‘Not that he would look twice at me. I only ever get the misfits and the oddballs, the ones with mother complexes, neuroses and out-of-control athlete’s foot. The Darrens of this world.’

‘Don’t be ridiculous, if anything, you are out of Erik’s league. You’ve just been unlucky with a few duds. And you need the duds to appreciate the gems.’

‘Like Erik.’ She shook her head in disbelief. ‘My God, he’s gorgeous.’ She shrugged. ‘But Erik actually looks comfortable in his skin so he’s not going to be interested.’

‘He should be so lucky, he’s probably thinking the same thing.’

‘He is such a ride, though,’ she said. ‘I am just going to enjoy looking at him while he’s around. But I hope he doesn’t get snaffled by someone else. Knowing my luck, he will be.’

‘I thought you were settling in for the single life?’

‘I am!’ she exclaimed. ‘That hasn’t changed. It’s not as though anything is going to happen. It’s like being on a diet but having a look through the window of the cake shop. Look, tell me if I’m out of order but I couldn’t help noticing that…’ She stopped.

‘What?’

‘Well, Brody seemed very much on edge.’

‘It’s the book, it’s going to be finished two weeks on Friday.’

‘And smoking a spliff?’

‘Lots of people do it.’

‘But are you okay with it?’

I shrugged. ‘He’s apologised.’

‘And the hamster?’

‘I’m going to make sure the cage is more secure.’

‘And are you okay?’

I nodded. ‘Of course I am.’

Jools didn’t say a word, just raised an eyebrow.

‘It’s not much fun living with a writer who is on a deadline,’ I admitted, keeping my voice low. ‘Poor Brody is locked away in the spare room and only appears for dinner. I feel like I’m his housekeeper.’

‘And rodent catcher.’

‘We’re at a low ebb, that’s all,’ I said. ‘But as soon as the book is done, things will be so much better. I know they will. We’ll go back to being a happily married couple. The pressure will be off and we can start doing things together… and on the last night of the supper club, we’ll have that little celebration for Brody and the book.’

‘Great idea,’ agreed Jools. ‘We’ll drink some fizz and raise a glass to Brody and his book.’ She smiled at me. ‘It will all be fine.’
